After surviving three shipwrecks in 1941, Unsinkable Sam retired as chief mouser at the Governor of Gibraltar’s office, then lived peacefully at Belfast’s “Home for Sailors,” hunting mice until his death in 1955. His legacy lives on in a pastel portrait, “Oscar, the Bismarck’s Cat,” at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England.
